Taste the Land Down Under’s extraordinary wines with a discount

Australian wine can be as soft as merino sheepskin or as big, bold and in your face as a saltwater crocodile headed worryingly your way – and just about everything in between. So, take your taste buds for a whirl by grabbing a bottle with 20% miles off on or before 14 April 2021!

This vast nation – you could fit Hong Kong into it 6,987 times – is a land of vastly contrasting climates, terroirs and winemaking styles. The cool climes of Tasmania produce delicate Pinot Noirs and Rieslings that dance on your tongue; the warmth and gentle sloping hills of the Hunter Valley provide vibrant and balanced Shiraz, Cabernet blends, Chardonnay and Semillon.

South Australia, home to the mighty red wine heartland of the Barossa Valley, the Cabernet Sauvignon kingdom of Coonawarra and McLaren Vale with its Shiraz and Grenache crown jewels, also offers apple-crisp Rieslings that rank among the world’s best.

West Australia is all about elegant, understated Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Victoria has more wineries than any other Aussie state, producing world-class wines from traditional and emergent varietals and some wonderful fortified blockbusters. Even Queensland, more associated with sun and surf, offers some fine wines from its cool, high-country Granite Belt.

Mclarean Vale, South Australia

Yangarra Estate in McLaren Vale specialises in varietals from France’s Rhone Valley – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre reds, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc in white – all made biodynamically by renowned winemaker Peter Fraser. Try the immensely concentrated yet beautifully finessed Yangarra Ironheart Shiraz 2014 – “A shiraz for the ages” in the words of local wine critic Campbell Mattinson – or the outstanding signature 2014 Yangarra High Sands Grenache, cloaked in rich, raspberry, chocolate flavours.

Hunter Valley, New South Wales

For something lighter for wine o’clock in these balmy spring evenings try Tyrell’s Hunter Valley Semillon 2019, just 10% alcohol, all apples and pears on the nose and bursting with fresh citrus flavours. The same producer is synonymous with fine Shiraz and the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz 2018 is a prime example, having snapped up a Gold Medal at the 2019 Sydney Wine Show. This beauty just lets the trademark black pepper and dark berry flavours get on with their job, keeping the gentle oak and tannins in their place. Outstanding value for money.

Margaret River, Western Australia

Take a journey across the Nullabor Plain to West Australia and discover the top-notch Cabernet Sauvignons or Cabernet blends of the Margaret River. Dip into the fabulous Vasse Felix Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2014 (98 points from critic James Suckling) where the perfumed aromas of cassis and redcurrants lure you like the Sirens of Homer’s Odyssey into a treasure trove of beautifully weighted fruit and velvet texture. Unlike Ulysses, give into temptation. One of the great Margaret River reds. Also try the understated Vasse Felix 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, oozing blackcurrants and dark plums on the nose, not overly tannic and just begging to be poured.
